There are approximately 50,000 species of spider on Earth - but how much do we know about these incredible creatures - and how do we study their behaviour?  Nanogirl (Dr Michelle Dickinson) hosts animal behaviour specialist and science communicator, Averill Moser-Rust (aka Spider Girl) in the lab to discuss her research into the remarkable world of jumping spiders. In this online event, we’ll explore the science of animal behaviour - understanding how spiders think and make choices, and learning how scientists work to answer that question in the lab. We’ll have a close-up look at these remarkable creatures, and build an experiment you can try yourself.

Dr Michelle Dickinson, M.N.Z.M., is a passionate researcher and teacher with a love of science and engineering. With a PhD in biomedical and materials engineering, Michelle has combined her interests to give her a unique insight into how nature and technology can learn from each other for scientific developments. In 2020, Michelle was honoured as the Hi-Tech Inspiring Individual of the Year. In addition to being a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, she has won a Women of Influence Award in the category of science and innovation. Her other accolades include the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award, the Prime Minister’s Science Media Communication Prize, and the New Zealand Association of Scientists Science Communicators Award.

A PhD student at the University of Canterbury, her research focuses on understanding the decision-making process of jumping spiders. Her work sheds light on the intricate behaviours of these fascinating creatures, offering valuable insights into their cognitive abilities. Averill's journey into the world of animal behaviour began with her experiences as a zookeeper, where she cared for a diverse range of animals, including the special care of baby kiwi, New Zealand's iconic national bird.
